Rosie Milne, British expat and author launched her third novel "Olivia & Sofia" at the Singapore Writers’ Festival 2016. The historical novel details the adventures of Sir Stamford Raffles, as seen through the eyes of his two wives.
Join us in hearing author Rosie Milne discuss the difficulties of being an expat in Singapore 200 years ago.
Think that travel is exhausting now? The horrors of economy on a long distance flight have nothing on the horrors of sea voyages in the time of Sir Stamford Raffles.
Rosie's novel, Olivia & Sophia, tells Raffles' story from the perspectives of his two wives: his beloved Olivia, who died young, and his long-suffering second wife, Sophia.
As she was writing the novel, Rosie discovered how challenging life was for Europeans in Asia during the early 19th century. Communicating with home at a time when letters could take 10 months to arrive from England, and coping with the heat in the days of full skirts, no fridges, and no aircon were bad enough, but far worse was the constant danger of death from tropical fevers which were then way beyond the capability of medics to cure.
By the time she'd finished Olivia & Sophia, Rosie couldn't help thinking how lucky we are to be alive now, and not then, especially as expats. She's sure you'll share the feeling, once you've heard her talk.
