Spirit Medium Tour
Interested in something a little different? Then this tour may be for you.
Tour Leader Chan CW will introduce us to Chinese religion, focusing on the fundamental differences in the Zong Jiao (religion) and the western notion of religion. Then we will look at the various ways in which Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism interact and cross-fertilise each other. We should then better understand Taoism and how the spirit medium is related to Taoism. Finally Chan will address the belief system and look at the new and emerging roles of spirit mediums in contemporary society. The phenomenon of spirit medium ship is often shrouded in mystery and misunderstood. Yet its existence since Chinese arrival in Singapore suggests that it fulfills social functions.
Don't worry, you do not need any prior knowledge of Chinese culture or religion to enjoy this tour.
About your tour leader: Chan CW is an anthropologist. He became fascinated by the story of Venerable Pu Liang, the 10th Abbot of Shuan Lin Monastery, and wrote the research project 'Light on the Lotus Hill' (which was reviewed in the BEAM) about it.
