This tour will be led by a heritage guide from the Tiong Bahru Heritage Volunteers. It will include a walk around the conversation estate of Tiong Bahru and an exclusive visit to the local Air Raid Shelter. Singapore's first communal bomb shelter in a public residential building, and one of very few that was used during wartime. We chose to organise this new tour as an alternative way to commemorate Armistice Day.
We will also walk to the adjacent general hospital, the former medical school, and site of the former HMS Prison, painting a picture of what the neighbourhood was like back in the early 1940s.
There is a great wet market (recently reopened after a three-month renovation) in the area and plenty of lovely cafes to have lunch or a coffee after the tour.
Car park behind Block 78 Moh Guan Terrace / Guan Chuan Street which is a short walk to the start point.
